What is an event photographer?

To us, events are those venues where many diverse businesses come together to network, chat, learn and to be informed of possibilities in business. Events could be seen quite differently, as spectacle  or concerts, though.

In this short article, I’m thinking of events as the former; as business mass-meetings where many will view the services of others. A good example might be a Chamber of Commerce Expo where dozens (or more), will demonstrate their services and talk with members of the public, other businesses and organisers.

The question we’re asking here is; “What is an event photographer?

Obviously, it’s someone who knows how to take a photo, and has the equipment to do it, but what else?

Here’s our checklist for a good event photographer:

1/ Knows how to take a good photo

2/ Knows how to take good photos consistently and repeatedly

3/ Knows how to arrive on time!

4/ Has the necessary equipment and understands it’s use.

5/ Delivers the images/files  QUICKLY not two weeks later!

6/ Charges fairly

7/ Is honest

8/ Is experienced

9/ KNOWS HOW TO INTERACT WITH OTHERS!

10/ Really wants the event to go well and knows how to convey the great atmosphere.

Most event photographers will tick most boxes here, but can they tick ALL the boxes? We can.

The author is an experienced photographer and holds recognised qualifications in people skills. Is that unique? Yes, perhaps it is.

Part two of… “What is an event photographer?”

Part 2 :

As I’ve already said: “events are those venues where many diverse businesses come together to network, chat, learn and to be informed of possibilities in business. Events could be seen quite differently, as spectacle  or concerts, though“.

To be clear, this is an event as defined here on this site. Please don’t confuse what I’m refering to with other styles of event……

I’d like to tell you about CRE, or the Christian Resources Exhibition. This is an event, (it’s that word again!), which occurs around three times per year, and is massive. The last one I worked was at the Sandown racecourse. It lasted 4 days, and ran from about 9:30 am, right through to evening shows, talks and workshops ending late in the evening.

Sandown CRE Cremetti

Sandown.

Techniques and requirements:

I shoot events like this with two cameras, usually an EOS 7D with a 200mm lens and an EOS 40D with an EFS 15-85.

It’s quite impossible to do this job with one camera. The crowds are powerfully directive in their flow, the exhibitors keen to be photographed in a packed shedule of dozens of “happenings.” The idea of changing lenses is a joke; there’s no time, nor space!! Since CRE Sandown covers 3 floors and nearly 1000 stands, plus bands, seminars, workshops, demonstrations and presentations, the photographer is faced with a massive task. Shoot the stands, make sure the stands look busy, (mind you, they are!), shoot interactions not poses, include establishing information, suggest a story, use the light as best you can, by utilising flash if you must, be fast….Very fast. Grab those fleeting moments and move on.

Know your camera, know your flash, and; with hundreds of spotlights, standlights and mixed ambient lights, be ready to use intuition to get it right!!!

Look for a good spot each time: The BBC took my images because I was fast, (uploaded within 30 minutes of a spotlight event direct to the editors), and because I did NOT shoot with the pack. When the “I’ve-got-£6000-of -gear-round-my -neck”,  photographer tells you your in the wrong place, don’t listen! Use you own style and perspective, (within reason).

Be prepared to walk for 6 or more hours a day, get no lunch, and only drink water from a dispenser. Be prepared for blisters and aching legs, be prepared for outrageous requests, questions and problems.

Expect 1000′s of images, and wear and tear on your gear. This is not a pleasure outing! However, having said that, I LOVE IT.

Alcester Food Festival and Alcester gallery.

Alcester’s Food Festival has just been and gone. Despite a rather dreary day, weather-wise, plenty of folk appeared to enjoy a good day in the High Street of Alcester. I could write about it, but it’s easier to post a few pics.

I was delighted to bump into my new friend, PeterKotka.

Ship of fools

The Magazine of Christian Unrest” – Christian humor magazine.  That’s what Google tells me Ship of Fools is.  It’s a bit deeper than that, though. Have a look for yourself, see what Ship 0f fools says to you, your church, your nation?  Huh?

Well, ok…. Here’s a clip from S.O.F.

“”We’re here for people who prefer their religion disorganized,” says the Ship’s editor and designer, Simon Jenkins.

Speaking of Simon Jenkins, I had the great pleasure of meeting the man himself at the Christian Resources Exhibition, Sandown Park, Esher. I even photographed him in his dressing gown. The photo was snapped up by Simon, and placed on his blog. Thanks Mr J!!!   Here’s the link:   Ship of Fools editor, Simon Jenkins.

Co, (or is it sub?),  editor Steve Goddard was present too. Just as well really, as he’s CRE’s press and marketing expert! I have a pic of Steve somewhere….. I’ll try to find it for you.

Ok, enough now. More soon.

Just back from the Christian Resources Exhibition at Sandown Racecourse in Esher.  The Sandown CRE 2012 event is my second year with the Christian Resources Exhibition team and, as usual, I’ve parted from them with hundreds of photographs, (thousands probably), and memories of re-meeting the team, who I have become so fond of.

This years Sandown CRE 2012, has introduced the opportunity for me to photograph some very significant people, who I shall tell you more about in the next instalment, but meanwhile, here is an idea of the forthcoming tales and pictures:

Lord Puttnam and 20th Century Fox introducing a re-mastered Chariots of Fire, to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics.

Cameron Saunders, managing director of 20th Century Fox UK

The multi talented Henry Olonga.

The Bishop of Oxford.

PLUS:

    • Jeff Lucas bringing his unique brand of humour
    • David Aldous from premier Radio and Revelation TV
    • Marilyn Baker
    • Jo Boyce
    • Tara Mathew
    • Michael Roberts
    • Rob Halligan
    • Oddments Theatre Company
    • Re:Creation Singers
    • Eleos Ensemble

These are just some of the people met, photographed and enjoyed at CRE 2012 Sandown.

More VERY soon, and hundreds of photos to see!  Bookmark this!

Peter Kotka.

Do you want to see something really remarkable?

Do you want to be amazed at what an artist can do?

Do you want to see the work of a really decent down-to-earth guy?

Be blown away by http://peterkotka.com/

I had the privilege of photographing Peter in Alcester today, and would like to share just one of the images.

I can’t overstate how remarkable this man’s work is. No wonder it’s so valuable!  The intricate and almost super-human work even can be seen in the reflections in the glass. Reflections themselves are incredibly hard to show, but this man, Peter Kotka, can even manipulate the reflected image to show outdoor seasons!! You need to see Peter Kotka’s work “up-close-and-personal” to really appreciate the mans talent.

So, thank you Peter Kotka, for being a great “subject” and also for using Cremetti images to promote your Facebook page.

Charity Big Breakfast in Alcester.

Do you know about the April 2012 charity Big Breakfast in Alcester?

It raises money for the Town Hall in Alcester, feeds hungry mouths, generates a fun atmosphere, and draws the community to a focal point.

What could be added to that?  GOOD FOOD!  That’s NO PROBLEM, as Alauna Rotary Club, (Alauna-Alcester), is providing the skills needed, and local suppliers are providing the food.

Here’s the Alcester Alauna Rotary Club Flyer:

Tokai Breezysound

Had the privilege of shooting the beautiful Tokai Breezysound recently.

I’m not much of a guitarist myself, but I know what I like!

The instrument was supplied by BHP Music LTD, and kindly hand delivered to Alcester, (home of the Court Leet, etc).
